Quaker Hospitality

William Penn House was established in 1966 to provide a safe and affordable space for individuals and groups coming to Washington to “speak truth to power” on pressing issues of the day, including war and peace, compulsory military service, and inequities based on race, class, and gender.  Fifty years later, the Hospitality Program at WPH continues to offer activists, educators, students, and other guests a supportive temporary community based on Quaker principles of peace building, respect, and inclusion.

Guest rooms have 2, 4 or 10 beds, with shared bathrooms. Our bedrooms are designated as  women only, men only, and gender-inclusive, in order to provide a safe, comfortable, and welcoming space for all.  Please note that most of our guest rooms are located on the 3rd floor of our 100-year-old row house — which we have not yet been able to equip with an elevator.  We deeply regret that this may make our accommodations difficult for potential guests with mobility issues.

Your stay at William Penn House includes:

  • a simple breakfast each morning
  • all linens, pillows, blankets, and towels
  • free WiFi access
  • use of our spacious living room, library, and garden (weather-permitting)
  • shared guest refrigerator, microwave, and food storage

Guests are also welcome to join our traditional Quaker meeting for worship each morning from 7:30-8:00 for silent reflection, meditation, and prayer.

Individuals and small groups may book up to 60 days in advance of their first night of stay. Groups of 8 or more receive a modest discount and may book up to 12 months in advance.

Our small resident staff is proud to welcome guests from the U.S. and around the world, from all backgrounds, beliefs, and walks of life.  Our simple, shared accommodations encourage ideas, actions, and friendships to flourish.  Come experience what it really means to be staying with Friends.
