Green Cleaning

The Bathroom scallywag Tutorial

”Pull up yer britches and ready yerself for a good scrub, ya landlubber!”

        -Captain Morgan

One of our recent interns, Morgan Tipton, helped us research green cleaning options to replace the toxic cleaning products that have become ubiquitous in our homes. These toxic products are building up in our rivers and oceans, causing significant damage to our environment. We have discovered that even a heavily utilized facility like ours can be clean, smell wonderful and avoid adding to the toxic sludge with old-fashioned cleaning options.

Morgan found the following recipies for our cleaning routine (and many more) on-line. You can find these and many more at Clean & Green

Tub & Tile Cleaner:

  • white vinegar in a spray bottle
  • baking soda
  • S.O.S. pad
  • water pitcher

Spray vinegar on tile walls or sink. Sprinkle baking soda on abrasive side of S.O.S. pad. Scrub the walls or sink working top to bottom to remove soap scum and dirt. Rinse thoroughly with the water pitcher.

Daily Tub & Tile Rinse:

  • rag
  • lavender disinfectant in a spray bottle - Mix a half-cup of borax with 1 gallon hot water.

Add a few sprigs of fresh thyme, rosemary or lavender. Steep for 10 minutes, strain and cool. Or add essential lavender or other fragrant oils instead of fresh herbs.

Spray down the shower, tub or sink and wipe with a damp cloth.

Mirror and Window Cleaner

  • glass cleaner in a spray bottle (contains ½ white vinegar, ½ water)
  • newspaper

Spray glass cleaner on the glass or mirror. Wipe dry with a crumpled newspaper and buff to a shine. No need to use paper towels!

Toillette for Toilets

  • denture tablets
  • lavender disinfectant spray
  • rag
  • wear gloves

Drop 1 denture tablet into the bowl and once dissolved, scrub the bowl with the toilet brush. Spray disinfectant on tank, lid and seat. Wipe tank, lid and seat in that order. Don't forget to flush!

 Floors

  • broom
  • mop
  • mop bucket
  • vinegar, baking soda & soap
  • 2 gallons hot water from tap

Sweep the floors first. Combine 1 cup vinegar, ¼ cup soda, and 1 Tablespoon of Dr. Bronner's soap in the mop bucket. Stir well to dissolve the washing soda. Mop as usual.
