A Day in the Life of an Intern - Janaki Spickard-Keeler
The William Penn House provides a unique opportunity for individuals or couples who are in unity with Quaker faith and practice. Interns live and work at the house, participating in community living while being encouraged to grow in areas for which they find an aptitude or a desire to contribute. The full-time internship is a 40-hour work week, comprised of approximately 6 hours a day, 6 days a week. Ideally, half of a given week will be spent working on William Penn House and Washington Quaker Workcamp programs, and the other half will be spent on hospitality duty. Schedule seminars and workcamps, including writing and sending contracts to groups
PLEASE NOTE: As a member of a hospitality staff, the intern is required to live at the House. Due to our small staff, we are not closed on most holidays but do close the House during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Most of the DC area is easily accessible by Metrorail (subway) or city buses, and William Penn House is a 10 to 15-minute walk to three Metrorail stops. The House is within walking distance of the Nation's Capitol, the House and Senate Office Buildings, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Museums and the National Gallery of Art, as well as being a short Metrorail ride to the White House and most government agencies..
Applications for internship are accepted on a rolling basis. Appointments vary in length and may be structured to meet an academic calendar.

Seasoned Friend(s) in Residence
How do we engage Quakers of all ages? Through our internship program we provide a process to develop our next generation of Quaker leaders. Through our Washington Quaker Workcamps, we offer the opportunity for the faith of our youth to be grounded in Quaker service. And through our Teachers of Peace and other seminars based on the testimonies we explore our Quaker Faith in the world with middle and high school students. But we can all be enriched by the presence of our greatest Quaker asset, our weighty Quakers.
