January Potluck

Join us Sunday January 4, 2009 when Byron Sandford of Friends Meeting of Washington and William Penn House will present a slide show and presentation on The Climate Project; A Call for Action to Save Our Species

Former Vice President Al Gore received the Nobel Peace Prize for his pivotal role in define with clarity the causes, the effects and solutions to the crisis of global warming. Following the success of his movie, "An Inconvenient Truth", he has trained over 2,500 individuals from around the world to teach his slide show. In October, 2008, Byron was among 150 members of the faith community invited to be trained by Mr. Gore to underscore that saving the planet is a moral issue as well as a practical and political concern. The program will discuss the science of how the Earth is warming and changing; the effects of global warming and practical approaches to slow the warming and even to reverse it.

Byron was raised in the Chihuahua desert of West Texas and Southern New Mexico and has experienced extreme temperatures, severe draughts and fragile environments. He has given presentations on other environmental issues including plastic bottles.

February Potluck

Join us Sunday February 8, 2009 when Pat Schenck of Annapolis Friends Meeting and Elizabeth DuVerlie of Stony Run Friends Meeting will present a program on Being White in a Multicultural Society

As the dominant culture, white people think of themselves as the norm, with other people being the different ones, the ones with a race. As a result, whites have a hard time seeing white culture. We will view the film Mirrors of Privilege: Making Whiteness Visible, a documentary that seeks to expose and understand the perspectives that perpetuate white privilege and racism in modern society. Then we will have an opportunity to reflect on how we experience whiteness, whether in ourselves or others.

Pat Schenck is the past clerk and founder of the Baltimore Yearly Meeting Working Group on Racism (WGR). She is a member of Annapolis Friends Meeting, an educator, and a member of the Annapolis Human Relations Commission. Elizabeth DuVerlie is the current clerk of the WGR and a member of Stony Run Friends Meeting in Baltimore. She holds a master s public health and spent a large portion of her career working in the field of Behavior Change Communication. She is also a mediator and a facilitator of restorative practices
